Batman Begins vs War of the Worlds
Just came back from War of the Worlds after watching it together with my friends. Somehow, after the show, all of us just sort of disappeared and went our separate ways. So we did not get to sit together and hash things out about the show. My opinion......Batman definitely beat the aliens flat man! Give me the Dark Knight anytime!
Let me clear one thing up though, the special effects were cool, no doubt, I mean, in this day and age, you expect that level of technology in the movies ever since The Matrix broke the dam. But the storyline got lost in all that super effects. If they had just concentrated more on the human element of the story, which they had plenty of room to do so but didn't, the story would have had more strength and be more watchable (in my humble opinion). One part that I did liked about the movie was when they showed what happened when people got desperate and will do anything to survive. But what we had were lots of explosions, people dying in every way imaginable, annoying kid screaming at every second (Dakota is one talented girl but in this movie, her talent was reduced to screaming at everything!), annoying elder brother and Tom Cruise, well....being Tom Cruise. And oh, amazingly enough, (as one reviewer pointed out) they happened to have the only car that was working and a clear path just magically appeared in front of them as they drive to safety. Hmmm.....
*SPOILER* DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING!!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Most complained that the ending was flat. It was flat in way, especially after seeing 1 and a half hours of non-stop action but in my opinion, it is the only part of the movie to me that made sense, the only part which was logical and did not irritate me at all. I am not talking about the part where the wife and family all came out unhurt, unscratched and immaculately dressed when everyone else is either dead, fried into ashes or basically lost. And the brother, lo and behold, was unhurt and managed to make it to Boston faster than his father did! Sheesh. I am talking about the part about how the aliens died and the reason as to why they did. So flat as it maybe, the ending was, for me, acceptable. Although one can raise the question as to why, after how many million of years they stood watching us, studying us, waiting to launch this attack, did they not know about microorganisms in our system?? Did they not do any abductions? Any experiments?
Oh well, all in all, it was a watchable movie though I wished the kid would stop screaming. I vote for Batman. Wittier and funnier dialog (with Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, you can't go wrong), better storyline and at the end, a much more handsome and believable hero (to me).
