Göreme Open Air Museum, Cappadocia, Turkey. (Part II)
This is the Yilanli (St Onuphorius) Church. It dates back to the 11th century. As I said in the previous post, the churches are the highlights of the park because of the frescos. Though some are damaged by the light and through the passage of time, you can still see most of the frescoes. We had to jostle with the tour groups in order to get into the church, if not, we would have to wait for a long time and we were on a time limit.
This is the chapel of St Barbara. Unlike the others with the colourful frescos, this chapel had mainly motifs painted in red directly to the walls.
Here is another view of Göreme National Park and this time through the doorway of the kitchen/ladder/refectory.
The four pictures above are of the Tokali (Buckle) church. This is the oldest known rock cut church in the region. The church is dated back to the last decade of the 10th century.
I am saving the best frescoes for last which is the Karalink (Dark) church, filled with vividly coloured frescoes. Look out for the next post...unless you are bored with frescoes and churches!
